Alienware M17x R4

Look no further than the following gaming laptop if you are a gamer: Alienware’s $2,599 M17x R4 is one of the best devices in its category. After we tested it, it gained a special place in our gamer heart. If you consider it, you will have one of the best experiences ever. Guaranteed.

A powerful 17 inch laptop

It is easy to see that this laptop comes with a screen of 17″ from its very name. The resolution that this type of display carries along is 1,920 x 1,080 pixels. The CPU is a 2.6GHz Intel Core i7-3720QM, the GPU is an Nvidia GeForce GT 680M (there is a second graphics card of Intel HD Graphics 4000), there are 8G of RAM, a 32GB mSATA cache drive, a 500GB 7,200rpm primary drive, the operating system is Microsoft’s Windows 7 Home Premium version, graphics memory is 2048 and storage capacity is 532GB.

The design of this Alienware M17x R4 is similar in chassis with the M17X made by the same manufacturer and recently reviewed. The touchpad, keyboard and logo of this device can display different colors if you chose an option called AlienFX.

The new Dell M17x R4 weighs quite a lot for its category: 9.6 pounds. The keyboard features backlight, a much necessary pro. The feedback we got from it during the test was superb. We could perform multitouch gestures on the trackpad without encountering issues.Alienware-M17x-R4

Battery, though, sucks. You get only 2 hours and a half.

Excellent display

But the display is smashing. The whole experience of either playing a game or watching a film was amazing. Details in the background of movies both in 2D and 3D were all visible. We saw excellent colors and brightness, great contrast and viewing angles, no lags and no other major con. The only problem to be had is the fact that the glass panel will bring a lot of reflections with it.

There are no unnecessary additions here. The desktop features a single icon and that is about it. Both the graphics unit and the processor deliver amazing quality when it’s about to get down to business, aka play games.

To be able to use the World Wide Web, you are offered the following options: dual-band (2.4GHz and 5GHz) 802.11a/b/g/n Wi-Fi and wired Gigabit Ethernet. That does not end there: in order to watch Blu-ray and DVDs, you get one Blu-ray player/DVD burner combo drive.

Impressive connectivity

Connectivity is something that is needed on any gadget nowadays. To cover the user’s needs, the M17x R4 uses a 9-in-1 media card reader, 4 USB 3.0 ports, audio ports, 1 HDMI-out port, 1 HDMI-in port, 1 eSATA/USB 2.0 combo port with USB PowerShare charging, 1 Mini DisplayPort jack for monitors and 1 VGA port. The port that this system needs to be complete is a Thunderbolt one.

When we threw some tasks in our Photoshop CS5 test to this laptop, the system’s processor took very good care of them and they were finished in 3 minutes.

If you want to keep your work protected from prying eyes, then you can use the device’s antivirus program. There is also an Internet security suite. But this one will be thrown to the recycle bin soon by any gamer who knows his stuff.

Review conclusion

And that’s a wrap on the Alienware M17x R4 gaming laptop. You will have a lot of fun using it, as we did. It may not be perfection, but it’s very close to it. So give it a try one of these days.
