Acer Aspire Timeline Ultra M3
A 15 inch new ultrabook
One of the most recent ultrabook to land in eager people’s hands is Acer’s Aspire Timeline Ultra M3. The good points of this product we tested for this review are many; the bad points are there, too. So this is a mix of both pros and cons. Looking at how this unit costs, you’ll be surprised at how cheap it truthfully is. But that was to be expected: some companies do not always choose to design the most expensive gadgets. Or otherwise they would risk losing their fanbase. Acer is one of the smart manufacturers. Tests done on their most recent entry revealed the following.
No fingertips on screen
Companies don’t always wish to release the most beautiful-looking product. The best performance, features and specs are the elements they want to bring to consumers’ attention. Which is something to praise. But there’s this tiny detail: best means expensive. OK, not in 100% of cases, but still. If you want to be seen in the company of the most exquisite gadget, prepare to pay a lot for it.
That is not the case with what we prepared for you today. The Acer Aspire Timeline Ultra M3 does not brag about a sky high price tag. It is content to function at a cheap one. But that has its limitations. The design is the first thing off the top of our mind concerning the cheap price. It is simply not attractive enough to make our hearts pump faster. But Acer has never been immensely known for astounding looks. The Aspire Timeline Ultra M3 is a simple device. Its exterior is matte black. So at least it’s not that awful shiny material that begs for fingerprints to be wiped off of it. If the inside of the laptop does not attract fingerprints, the lid does.
The keyboard that reveals itself is sunken. Its chiclet style features keys which are black. They look nice and also simple. The palmrest that harbors tired palms and wrists is a generous space. The clickpad is quite a large one. The numeric keypad has small buttons.
Thickness for this model is only 20mm. It’s quite a pro point and a feat for a product with a screen of 15″. But that is followed by a minor con: 2.3 kg in weight. Of course we could lift and carry this laptop around. But if you’re set on owning a very light device, this one should definitely not be on your list.
Intel Core i5 2467M processor
The display on the Timeline Ultra M3 features, apart from the 15″, 1,366 x 768 pixels of resolution. That is not very much to begin with. But then we got reminded of the price and understood the reason behind this low res. If only that were the problem. But it’s not. When we moved from the display’s center, colors started to shift.
CPU is a 1.6GHz Intel Core i5 2467M. Not too shabby. Under no circumcises should you think of it as a speed monster. GPU is better: Nvidia GeForce GT 640M. It is an upgrade that came in due time.
This 15″ laptop is the first with such a screen to sport an optical drive. The battery is a hero in this category. Its estimated life was, in our reviewing phase, 5 hours and 30 minutes. So very great. You won’t see this very often.
Acer’s Aspire Timeline Ultra M3 laptop will be a pleasant surprise once you give it a shot.
